Future-proof health care

More than 20 % of Bochum's employees subject to social insurance contributions work in the health industry. This sector is thus the largest employer in the city. Medical and nursing care is considered excellent and sub-sectors such as medical technology and the pharmaceutical industry occupy a leading position. Close cooperation between business and research is a success factor and establishes the healthcare industry as an innovation driver for modern healthcare.

The health industry is also the largest sector overall in NRW in terms of turnover and jobs and an important growth and innovation driver for the region. Research and business cooperate closely here. NRW and also Bochum are home to some of the global players in the medical technology, pharmaceutical industry, and medical biotechnology sectors. The industrial health business in particular makes an important contribution with enormous growth rates.

Bochum is home to many players in education and training - such as the Aesculap Academy, which belongs to the B.Braun Group, the Federal Association of Self-Employed Physiotherapists (IFK), or contec GmbH, a management and personnel consultancy for the health and social economy.

The Hochschule für Gesundheit (University of Health), founded in 2009, is also central to the training of professionals in Bochum. It is based on the Health Campus Bochum and has become known as the first state university to exclusively provide training for the health professions.
