Bochum is one of the most important clinic locations in Germany because of its dense hospital landscape. The university hospital of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum treats more than 300,000 patients each year. Five geographically separate located infirmaries were merged in 1976 into the university hospital of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. As the so called Bochum model they are widely renown beyond the city borders.
All leading doctors of the infirmaries are likewise professors of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. With about 1,000 doctors, 2,500 nurses, and 3,000 hospital beds the clinics in Bochum ensure the care for more than 100,000 in-patients annually in one of the most populated regions in Europe.
