Bochum combines all requirements of a promising location: well-qualified people, zest for innovation and excellent research facilities. Six universities with about 41,000 students, roughly 700 professors and over 3,500 lecturers ensure a vivid science scene.
On the one hand, this allows providing an outstanding vocational education- and training offer which ensures the availability of highly-qualified employees on site. On the other hand, the excellent infrastructure of universities represents the breeding ground for brilliant results in terms of research and development, which, in turn, characterizes the location.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is the academic home to 35,000 students. Each year, research projects are funded with more than 85 million euro from external sponsors. The high number of research-intensive subjects allows for a successful interdisciplinary research.
Seven special research units of the German Research Association (DFG) and seven DFG-research groups, as well as eleven central research institutes, eight private research institutes and two competence centers of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) account for the scientific capabilities of the Ruhr-University Bochum. Five international graduate schools provide research capacity to academics from across the world.
The University of Applied Sciences Bochum with its 4,100 students is an internationally oriented school for engineering and business. Three competence centers accommodate six technical departments which offer all in all 24 degree courses – from Architecture and Civil Engineering over Surveying and Geo-Computer Science through to Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science up to Business and Economics.
The new Hochschule für Gesundheit (hsg) (School for Health) offers five undergraduate courses for non-medic healthcare professions. In addition to their degree, the students at the hsg can obtain the licensing for their graduate profession according to the applicable labor legislation. In September 2010, the hsg started to offer their study courses in the interim building at the Universitätsstraße. In 2013, the courses will take place in a new building situated on the Health Campus NRW. The newly constructed complex will serve as educational college for about 1,300 prospective midwives, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, as well as health care assistants, hospital- and geriatric nurses.
The state-approved Evangelische Fachhochschule Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe (EFH) (Protestant University of Applied Sciences Rhineland-Westfalia-Lippe) offers vocational training in step with actual practice for approx. 2,000 students in the fields of hospital care, social work and therapeutic pedagogy.
The EBZ Business School in Bochum provides study courses focused on the Real Estate- and Property Management. Students can obtain various degrees such as the one as Real Estate Economist or the master´s degree in „Real Estate Management“.
The Technische Fachhochschule Georg Agricola (TFH) (State-Approved Private University of Applied Sciences) has been teaching technical knowledge in the areas of energy and environment since 200 years. The approx. 1,500 students are provided with the opportunity to choose between attending full-time study courses or extra-occupational training – in the fields of Geo-Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Future Energies, Environment- and Energy Technologies, and Computer Science Technologies.
